Leg Lengthening

Following fractures of the lower limbs the legs can be left shortened and deformed. If these problems are significant they can lead to pain, loss of function and necessitate a shoe raise.

Leg lengthening and realignment can be achieved by 2 methods:

External Fixation constructing a frame outside the leg to slowly correct the deformity by growing new bone.

Nailing inserting a rod inside the bone to straighten and lengthen the bone.

Both methods are difficult and complications common, however a satisfactory result is normally achieved.
